Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their family members until they die. Lolita's Health

Lolita is gorgeous, but her health continues to decline. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that would like to see her returned into the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a vulnerable state.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current state of health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health is declining.

It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an important part in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the whale that died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
